Recovering

Thank you soooo much for the concern! Really appreciated all your home-remedies for flu. Y'know ? The best remedy of all was your concern! Arigato gozaimasu!~

Being ill was no fun at all! I felt trapped in a nightmare! No yummy food. Can't bake. Horrible medicine and eeeyuuucckk porridge and soft food for 4 freaking days!

The most hated routine

I hate drinking cough syrup. It was supposedly to have a friendly fruity mix flavour as indicated on the label. But NOOOOOO! It was awful. Tasted like.... cough medic. 3 times a day some more! Bugger.

I wasn't able to find Echinacea nor would I dare try a "tall glass of medicated bitter tea" as suggested by lasilasi and the latter by Dan. Sorry la Dan. I'd rather take that cough syrup than a big big glass of bitterness. However I did try out Ming's reflexology technique for hands. I can't positively say it helped cleared my blocked nose, but I do feel relaxed after that.

Unfortunately, my voice has changed due to the sore throat. It has gone rather croaky... like a frog. Or a duck? Lol! I did drink lots of water and honey water and still doing so. I guess it didn't prevent sore throat but it helped to lessen the itch and soreness. Not to forget the numerous times of visits to the loo. *Ahem* Without water, I guess I'd have lost my voice! *shrugs* Touch wood... Anyhow, my voice is recovering slowly. Don't get a shock when you hear a froggie at the other end of the line.

Left Over

I am down with fever, soar throat and a very runny yet blocked nose. I have never used up so much tissue papers in my life! Sigh... I hate flu. I hate that woozy-drowsiness feeling. I hate pills and capsules. I hope I get well soon... as fast as possible!

Being ill may prevent me from writing long long posts but those lovely leftover strawberries and yummy mousse would not go to waste! Eating them plainly seemed a tad boring. Baking another cake would be nice but I am sick la... *achoo*. Something fast and edible will do. Incorporating both fresh strawberries and mousse into scones was the only way I could think of.

I have never heard of anybody having scones with mousse before. I may be one of the weirdos out there. Strangely enough, they complimented each other perfectly. 10 scones gone in 15 mins.

*achoooo* I need my rest. Toodles~

Strawberry Attack!

Strawberries are at their best during summer. However, living in Malaysia does not limit us from enjoying our very own strawberries as well as imported ones. Recently I went to Tesco and was surprised to find strawberries from Egypt! I never knew strawberries grew there. I bought a large punnet and regretted. Not because they were bad but... I went home and found more strawberries in the fridge! My aunt recently had a vacation at Cameron Highlands and gave us 5 punnets! Plus mine, 6 punnets in total!!

I can sell strawberries by now. Or eat them all and the next day. I couldn't decide what to do with them and try out the Egyptian strawberry first. Surprisingly, they were so much juicier, sweeter and firmer. Not to mention triple the size of our Cameron ones. Hmm... I have a mix of sweet and sour, firm and mushy, large and tiny. Strawberry mousse would be good. A strawberry cake would be lovely too! Or maybe... just maybe... a combination of both!

Hehe... after a lil lookup in my collection, I used up some of the strawberries, both Egypt's and Cameron's, and turned them into a rich, melt-in-the-mouth strawberry mousse cake. I learned this from a chef long ago and it has been a favourite of mine.

Tadaaaahh!~ The Strawberry Mousse Cake slice.

I am still left with 2 punnets!

Late Night Snacking

Yes, I do snack... at night. I'm guilty of it. I have my dinner everyday, on time and eat normally. For some reason my stomach starts to growl around midnight and it's.... SUPPER time! How I wish I could have tossai and teh-o-limau ais at the nearest mamak stall. Or maybe hot chocolate with brownies! Mmmm~

Sadly, I'm not allowed to go out after midnight. It's 2am now and I'm hungry. And this innocent looking yellow coloured cup caught my attention.

3 minutes later....

I just had to.

ps: I'm neither rolly polly nor suffering from eating disorder. I'm just hungreeee~

Tagging for Charity

Got tagged by babyfiona. So bad... she's trying to distract me away from food and make me pull my hair. *sob sob sob* Erk... I have a feeling I've missed out 2-3 tags! Eeeek! I'm so forgetful. Ok ok, I'll do this first and go back with the previous ones later. This long tag that looks like one of those 'fill in the blanks' or 'complete the sentences below' type that I'd find in my primary/secondary English books. Anyway, it is supposedly to be for a good cause. Just go with the flow, and I hope it's for real.

Wokie. I'm being lazy and am copying the intro from babyfiona who copied from Irene. At times like these, I love technology. *blek* So here it is.

Sugar frenzy

Hooray! The cake I mentioned previously is completed finally! The whole kitchen was nicely 'blessed' with sugar for the past 3 days. Sugar here, sugar there, sugar everywhere! Hehe... The place had such sweet scent. Amazingly no ants. *Phew*

This cake is for my grandpa's birthday. My grandpa is the typical chinese person. Must have rice. Only use chopsticks. Loves high-pitched-voice oldies. He doesn't like buttercream and it was tough thinking up a cake that could survive the long journey. And I wanted something different. Something I have never done before to any of his birthday cakes. End up, I baked his favourite prune cake decorated with sugar cherry/peach blossoms (supposedly to be la) that I've been making for the past 2 days! I know, I'm slow.

And messy.

The cake turned out pretty much the way I wanted it to be except for the flowers. They don't look like cherry blossoms at all. *sobs*

They resembled more like I-dunno-what flowers.

I hope he'll have a pleasant surprise.

Warm Morning

Attending classes, baking and preparing a cake that's due this weekend have been keeping me busy. And away from blogging. Sowwieee... I'll try to update everyone as much as I can. There are heaps of photos and draft posts. Eeeps!

I woke up early this morning and made some hot fluffy pancakes for everyone. Here's a simple step-by-step guide from me. Hehe... Hope this will keep everyone occupied till I update again.

Pancakes
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup milk
1 tbsp melted butter

1) Sift together dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, milk, egg, and melted butter.

2) Add liquids to the dry ingredients. Mix until batter forms a thick, lumpy and runny batter. Do not overmix.

3) Preheat a pan and rub on a little butter. Pour a ladle of the batter on the heated pan. When the top is full bubbles and the bottom has turn golden brown, flip over the pancake. Fry until both sides are golden.

4) Serve hot with any of your favourite combination:
- butter+honey
- butter+maple syrup
- jams
- chocolate sauce
- peanut butter

Enjoy your breakfast!

At the Cinema

Went out for a movie with my family last night. Transformers again. I doubt I will ever get bored with this movie. It's way too cool. We watched it at Times Square and were enjoying it in their largest cinema, Hall 1. Got a nice comfy seat in the middle, equipped with yummy popcorn and thirst quenching drink.

But... there must be some people who are just annoying.

I did not come to see your overgrown lalang...

Don't have to whistle out loud ba...

Got mosquitoes around?

I hate you most.

Blueberry Muffins

It has been awhile since I wrote about food and living up to my blog Itadakimasu. To make up to this, here is a goodie recipe.

Muffins and cupcakes are almost identical. It took me quite sometime to realise what I was munching on. Mostly I relied on their tags. Heck, it would be easy to fool me by just switching the muffin tag with the cupcake's and I would not notice anything! However, if you know, you there are two main differences between a cupcake and a muffin. The most obvious is that cupcakes are usually frosted, but the greater difference lies in the texture. Muffins tend to be more dense, and heavier, possibly due to more moisture content. Cupcakes are a bit lighter and fluffier than muffins. Seems easy? Bare in mind that not all cupcakes and muffins are like that. There are dense cupcakes and fluffy muffins too! Best bet... peel off the papercups and enjoy your muffin or cupcakes.

In this recipe, blueberries are used. Fresh blueberries are quite expensive here in Malaysia and not every supermarket carries them. Fresh or frozen blueberries are usually used in muffins, or decorated as whole on cakes. I would not recommend substituting canned blueberries when fresh/frozen ones are called for. Canned ones usually come in thick syrup and most likely the berries are mashed up. These are better off used as a pie/cake filling and topping as they have more sugar and water content, or if you'd want a smoother, gooey texture. Buttermilk is also used in this recipe as it acts as a leavening agent and provides a tender texture to the muffin. It also helps to prevent the blueberries from sinking to the bottom. Despite the usage of self raising flour and buttermilk, these muffins have a much denser cake like texture.

Blueberry Muffins

90g butter
110g brown sugar
15g skim milk powder
1 egg
165g self raising flour
1 tsp vanilla extract
125ml buttermilk
30-40g fresh/frozen bluberries

  1. Preheat oven at 200°C.
  2. Cream butter, sugar and milk powder until light.
  3. Add in egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Mix well.
  4. Fold in flour until just combined. Stir in blueberries.
  5. Pour into prepared muffin pan and bake for about 20-30 minutes.
Yields: 6 large muffins

The Good and The Bad

-To all that frequent this blog, sorry for not keeping everyone updated. I appreciate your every visits. Muaxxxxxx!-

A lot of things happened during my absence from blogging. There are times when I feel really lucky and all things good happen to me. And whenever there is goodness, there will bound to be something bad waiting to pounce on me. Ever noticed how unfortunate situations being enlightened later on with good news, and vice versa? Thus, this is my story.

Last Thursday me, hotaru and friends went for a short vacation at Genting. This leisure trip was planned months ago. We met up at KL Sentral and board the Genting Express bus. The journey there was rather smooth until we arrived at First World Hotel lobby. In all my trip to Genting, I have never seen such a huge crowd! It was 2.45pm. I took a queue number... 647, looked at the electronic queue board... the current queue number: 415!

We waited and waited and waited... finally checked in at 4.20pm! First World Hotel beds have never been so comfy since. Our rooms at the 20th floor had a lovely view of the theme park. Everything seemed so tiny down below.

Nice cool day. Somehow, it felt peaceful just watching from up there. We didn't head for the theme park. Not the indoor theme park too. We went straight for the casino. I was inspected as usual by the guards. I'm old enough ok. Just look young only. And I'm proud of it. Hehehe... *Ahem* Photo taking was not allowed in there. Else it would be nice to be able to show all the hustle and bustle in there. It almost resembled pasar malam. Hardcore gamblers were everywhere! The facial expressions shown by those aunty-uncle are scary. Basic mannerism was absent. They do not care who you are, young and old behaved and treated each other alike. Pushing and shoving were common. It would be my lucky day if someone in the casino actually said "excuse me". And to them, money DO grow on trees.

The only thing I played was Roulette. It's amusing watching them build replicas of KL towers on every number. And for me? No 'kl tower' nor RM 100 bungalows. I build my RM 10 house on someone's Eiffel Tower. Thanks to his tower, I got back RM 80.... twice! Thank you Uncle Lim for sponsoring my stay and treating us to a nice bak kut teh dinner. At least we didn't have any Maggi Mee for a day.

The next day, we went back to the casino once more. I played little this time. Mainly watching gamblers placing extremely large sum of money on the table to play. *Sigh...* If only they'd just give me. At night about 10.15pm, we headed to the cinema to watch Transformers. OH MY GAWD!! The movie is freaking GOOD!

I thought it'll be like the cartoon. Only difference is in 3D. But Noooo... I was wrong. Simply beautiful effects! Loved bumblebee. Begining was a little slow, but later on there were lots and lots of action! Hot cars, cool effects, good humor, cute bumblebee... and a sexy babe.

Aww...

After the movie, I called home to give my usual report of the day. This time however, the usual reminders were forgotten. Winning RM200 seemed nothing afterall. The excitement from Transformers no longer in my mind. Bad news had to come. My brother fractured his hand. He trip on the stairs in school and fell like superman. Right hand first. He had to undergo a surgery to mend his broken right palm. Apparently, the bone connecting to his little finger was broken into pieces! 3 wires were fixed into his palm to hold every bit together. Ouch...

Why can't young boys stay out of trouble? Trouble seemed to be their middle name. He's out of the hospital the day I came home from Genting. He is alright now, but sadly, he will not be able to use his right hand for at least 6 months. 6 months!!!! SPM is near and I can't bare to think of his future.

The shock seemed to have settled down. I am back from Genting and will be blogging again as usual. I guess it's time to pray and buang sui. Hopefully nothing bad will happen again.
