Earlier today we went for prayers at the Karma Kagyu centre. Today's Wesak Day, a day where we celebrate Buddha's birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha. The altar in the centre was beautifully laid with flowers and offerings.
Chanting and praying are an important part of Wesak. It was boring. I almost fell asleep. After about 2 hours of prayer, we proceeded with the 'Bathing the Buddha' ceremony. Water is poured over the Buddha and it is said to serve as a reminder to us to purify the mind from greed, hatred and ignorance. We were then blessed by Rinpoche (monk?) and had our vegetarian lunch. The wide selection of food... you can't even believe it was cooked there and then. They were pretty good despite being vegetarian.
